Understanding pelvic symptoms and when ultrasound can help!
Pelvic symptoms are common but that doesn’t mean they should be ignored.
Many women live with pelvic pain, heavy or irregular periods, bloating, or unexpected bleeding for months (sometimes years), unsure whether their symptoms are “normal” or worth investigating. A gynaecology ultrasound is often the first, most reassuring step in understanding what’s going on.
At SES Gynaecology, part of Somerset Early Scans, we provide specialist gynaecology ultrasound scans across Bristol, Bath, Bridgwater, and Exeter, offering clear answers, early reassurance, and honest guidance.
What Is a Gynaecology Ultrasound?
A gynaecology ultrasound is a safe, non-invasive imaging test used to assess the uterus, ovaries, and surrounding pelvic structures.
Depending on your symptoms, this may include:
- Pelvic (abdominal) ultrasound
- Transvaginal ultrasound (internal scan for clearer detail)
- Ultrasound does not use radiation, is widely used in gynaecology, and is often the most informative first investigation.
When Should You Consider a Gynaecology Ultrasound?
You may benefit from a scan if you experience:
- Pelvic or lower abdominal pain: Persistent, cyclical, or worsening pain should always be assessed.
- Heavy, prolonged, or irregular periods including flooding, clots, or bleeding that affects daily life.
- Bleeding between periods or after sex: This is never something to ignore and should be investigated.
- Postmenopausal bleeding: Any bleeding after menopause should be assessed promptly.
- Bloating or pressure symptom: Especially if persistent or associated with pain or changes in bowel or bladder habits.
- Fertility or cycle concerns: Including irregular cycles, suspected ovulation issues, or known conditions such as PCOS.
- Known gynaecological conditions: Follow-up of fibroids, ovarian cysts, endometriosis, or adenomyosis.
What Can a Gynaecology Ultrasound Show?
A specialist ultrasound can help identify or rule out conditions such as:
- Fibroids
- Ovarian cysts
- Polycystic ovaries
- Adenomyosis
- Endometrial thickening or polyps
- Pelvic free fluid
- Structural causes of pain or bleeding
- Just as importantly, a scan can also show normal findings, which is often deeply reassuring.
Why Early Scanning Matters
Early assessment allows:
- Earlier clarity
- More treatment options
- Less anxiety and uncertainty
- Better planning of next steps
- Waiting rarely makes symptoms easier to manage but understanding them often does.
What Ultrasound Can’t Always Answer (Honest Care)
At SES Gynaecology, we believe in honest, evidence-based care.
Ultrasound may not always:
- Explain all pain (for example, some endometriosis may not be visible)
- Provide a definitive diagnosis on its own
- Replace clinical assessment or further tests where needed
- We will always explain findings clearly, discuss limitations openly, and guide you on appropriate next steps.
