In pregnancy it is more important to take care in the sun. Your skin is more sensitive to the sun which can mean it’s more likely to burn. Changing hormone levels make you more likely to develop skin pigmentation. Sometimes this can be in the form of dark patches on the face called “Chloasma” or “Melasma”. This usually goes away after pregnancy. To reduce the chance of chloasma it is recommended to protect your skin with adequete clothing, wear a hat with a wide brim that protects your face, neck and ears and spend time in the shade whenever possible.

Are sunscreens safe in pregnancy? I have looked for guidance from national and international bodies, but there does not appear to be any as yet. Due to the observation in studies that with chemical sunscreens, some is absorbed into the body, products containing the active ingredient zinc oxide or titanium dioxide (mineral sunscreens) could be a good choice as they are hypoallergenic and sit on the skin instead of being absorbed by it. Choose one with a high factor; 50+ or at least 30. Traditional, chemical sunscreens are however, not known to be harmful.

In hot weather, it is easy to become dehydrated. Dehydration is less well tolerated and is to be avoided. Plan ahead, avoiding log spells standing outside in the heat, always carry a bottle of water with you and be aware that when you exert yourself water losses will be greater. Even in the first trimester your body has already changed significantly, with changes in your blood volume, heart output and how your kidneys work. Before anyone can see you are pregnant you will already be more sensitive to dehydration and need to be cautious in the sun.

80% of pregnant women develop some swelling of the ankles, usually towards term. Hot weather can make this worse due to dilation of little veins in the peripheries. Whilst not harmful in itself, swollen ankles can be uncomfortable and sometimes ache. Another reason to avoid long periods of standing outside. Pack a camping chair if you are heading to an outdoor event.
