How Reassuring is an Early Scan?

Early pregnancy scans. How reassuring are they? The background risk of miscarriage is around 20%. After a heartbeat is seen on scan, the risk reduces to 3-4%. Other parameters can also provide reassurance. The size of the baby fitting in with the pregnancy dates. The baby’s heart rate not being slow. The absence of subchorionic haematomas (bleeding areas on scan). The vast majority of women who attend for a scan find it enormously comforting and reassuring. It can alleviate anxiety for couples who have had a bad experience in the past or gone through fertility treatment. Very occasionally a pregnancy is lost despite a previous reassuring scan and for those people they may feel they would not want to have an early scan next time. It is very much a personal choice whether a reassurance scan is the right thing for you or not.
