Detailed second trimester reassurance scan +/- gender £120

The main purpose of this scan is to check your pregnancy is viable by visualising your baby’s heartbeat and movements. After 16 weeks we can also check your baby’s gender. This is optional. Please let us know if you do or do not wish to know the gender.

In addition to the above we will check:

Head Circumference (HC), Abdominal Circumference (AC) and Femur Length (FL) to check fetal growth. Amniotic fluid around the baby. Brain, stomach, kidney, bladder, abdominal wall, limbs and spine (as far as can be seen at this stage). Placental site

Images will be provided as thermal prints (included) or USB stick (£12) for you to keep. If the gender is proving difficult to determine we will ask you to go for a walk then try again. If we still cannot tell with enough certainty then we will offer you one complimentary rescan.

Accuracy

Diagnosis of gender is 97% accurate.

Structural/anatomical problems in the baby are thankfully uncommon. If present, some can be detected at this stage. The detection rate of your scan for problems will depend on factors like your gestation (number of weeks pregnant), your BMI (weight) and the position of your baby.

Your baby is growing and changing rapidly and some problems might not be seen on today’s scan. Ultrasound scanning has limitations and will not pick up all health problems.

You will have a 20 week anomaly scan through the NHS and this is a longer and more detailed scan than today’s scan. Your NHS anomaly scan includes views of the fetal heart which is not included in this second trimester scan. We strongly recommend that you attend your NHS scan as today’s examination will not include all of the same checks.
