Somerset Pessary Clinic

Consultant-led | Nurse-delivered | Multidisciplinary | Local & Accessible

At Somerset Pessary Clinic, we provide a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach to the care of pelvic organ prolapse and urinary incontinence. Our service is delivered by experienced nurses and supported by pelvic floor physiotherapists, ensuring a holistic and patient-centred experience. If your symptoms require further intervention, we can arrange a timely review with a consultant for surgical assessment or advanced treatment planning. Our goal is to support you with the most appropriate, effective, and personalised care at every stage of your journey.

We provide fast, local access to pessary fittings, routine follow-up care, and support for women choosing non-surgical treatment.

What is Pelvic Organ Prolapse?
Pelvic organ prolapse happens when the pelvic floor muscles and tissues become weakened, causing one or more pelvic organs (such as the bladder, uterus, or bowel) to drop down into or out of the vagina.

Symptoms may include:

  • A sensation of something “coming down” in the vaginal area
  • A feeling of heaviness or dragging in the lower abdomen
  • A visible or felt bulge in the vagina
  • Discomfort during intercourse
  • Difficulty passing urine or stools

What is Urinary Incontinence?
Urinary incontinence is the involuntary leakage of urine. It can affect women of all ages and may significantly impact quality of life.

Types of incontinence we treat:

  • Stress incontinence – leakage when coughing, laughing, sneezing, or exercising
  • Urge incontinence – sudden, intense need to urinate, often with leakage
  • Mixed incontinence – a combination of stress and urge symptoms

What is a Pessary?

A pessary is a soft, removable device inserted into the vagina to support the pelvic organs and manage symptoms of prolapse and/or urinary incontinence. It is a well-established, non-surgical option used safely by many women.

Types of Pessaries We Offer
We offer a full range of pessaries tailored to your needs and anatomy, including:

  • Ring pessary – Comfortable and widely used
  • Ring with support – Offers additional lift for the vaginal walls
  • Gellhorn pessary – Ideal for more significant prolapse
  • Cube pessary – For advanced support when others are unsuitable
  • Continence pessary – Designed for stress incontinence

We provide full support with fitting, instruction, follow-up, and review.
