Dr Sarah Merritt

I am a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist with a specialist interest in early pregnancy and acute gynaecology, recurrent miscarriage and  ultrasound scanning.  I am passionate about empowering women during the early stages of their pregnancy. I have three young children and am all too aware of the anxieties and range of emotions from early pregnancy through to delivery that women, their partners and families can have.

I am the lead Consultant for Early pregnancy and Acute Gynaecology at Musgrove Park Hospital, Taunton. Prior to this post I worked for three years as a clinical research fellow in the early pregnancy and acute gynaecology unit at St Thomas’ Hospital, London. I have become an expert in managing complicated cases. I have a post graduate accreditation in scanning, provide second opinion scans in more difficult cases, and deliver scan training to other clinicians. I have completed a research project in reassurance scanning in early pregnancy particularly focusing on women with a history of recurrent miscarriage and I have an on going interest in clinical audit and research at both local and national level.  I have presented at both National and International Conferences,

In addition to my Early pregnancy work I undertake the full scope of practice of a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist in my NHS role. I have expert competence in both open and laparoscopic (keyhole) abdominal and hysteroscopic (womb) gynaecology surgery. I have also completed an advanced training module in labour ward practice.

Qualifications: Postgraduate Certificate Specialist Ultrasound Practice; gynaecological and early pregnancy ultrasound (with Distinction), Member of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, Diploma of the faculty of sexual and reproductive healthcare, Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery, Bachelor of Medical Sciences.

Dr Joanna Clark

I have been a Doctor for 16 years and having 2 young children myself I have experienced at first hand the roller coaster ride of pregnancy. It is never a smooth path but a journey that throws the unexpected at you at every turn!

I really value the opportunity Somerset Early Scans gives me to provide people with reassurance or the answers that they seek and I know that the way this care is given makes all the difference. All scans are not equal and a bad experience at the hands of someone with poor communication skills can be traumatic. Equally disappointing is being treated like you are an object on a conveyor belt. Having been a very worried person on numerous occasions both before and during pregnancy I have lived this and pride myself in looking after my patients in a sensitive and individualised way.

In addition to working at Somerset Early Scans I work as a GP at Taunton Road Medical Centre in Bridgwater. Before completing my GP training, I worked in Obstetrics and Gynaecology and gained a qualification in this specialty (MRCOG). I then obtained the Certificate in Ultrasound of the Faculty of Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare and now perform around 200 early pregnancy and gynaecology scans per year. I have published many articles on the subject of women and newborn health and won several awards.

Qualifications: Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery, Bachelor of Medical Sciences, Member of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, Member of the Royal College of General Practitioners, Diploma of the Faculty of Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare, Letter of Competence in Intrauterine techniques, Letter of Competence in Subdermal Implants, Certificate in Ultrasound.

Angela Nicholson Nurse Practitioner

I have been a nurse for 25 years and am married with 2 teenage daughters. I have worked in Gynaecology for most of my career and now specialise in Early Pregnancy and Fertility, which is very rewarding.

I obtained a Diploma in Midwifery from the University of Exeter in 1993 and a Postgraduate Certificate in Obstetrics and Gynaecology Ultrasound from the University of the West of England, Bristol in 2004. I am a trainer in ultrasound and regularly teach students of radiography and Obstetric Registrars how to scan. I have felt honoured to receive several awards for my work in early pregnancy.

I know the reassurance that Somerset Early Scans is able to offer is so valuable.

Debbie Hamilton Rose, Nurse Practitioner

I have worked as a nurse in women’s health, including early pregnancy for over 20 years.

I have 2 young boys with my husband and remember the anxieties that come with pregnancy that we are not always prepared for. With this and my current NHS experience; I acknowledge the need for high standard, experienced and reassuring care.

I am registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council and have a Bachelor of Sciences diploma in Health. Specialising in early pregnancy and fertility has enabled me to qualify as a Sonographer in Early Pregnancy and Gynaecology with a Post Graduate Certificate in Ultrasound.

I draw great enjoyment from scanning in early pregnancy clinics; getting to know patients in a very unique situation and it makes me feel very special to make a difference in their life by helping them easing their anxiety with reassurance and care.

I am delighted to work for Somerset Early Scans and this amazing opportunity to support women and their families to go through this incredible and sometimes challenging period of their life. I am pregnant with identical twin boys so I understand the anxieties that expectant parents feel.

I have worked as a nurse in women’s health, including gynaecology and early pregnancy for over 5 years. Before completing my ultrasound training I worked in the community as a mental health nurse and as a nursing assistant in a very busy Early Pregnancy Unit in Bristol.

Gail Bratt, Practice Manager

I am 61 years old but I have to say I don’t in any way feel that age! I am married to Duncan and I have 5 children from a previous marriage (1 girl and 4 boys). They are now all grown up and have flown the nest. I fully appreciate how lucky I am to have them all. I also have one very special granddaughter, born to my daughter in December 2019.

I had fertility problems when trying to conceive my first baby and went through 7 years of tests and procedures. I lived on a rollercoaster of feelings and emotions until finally conceiving through IVF treatment. This enables me to have empathy with lots of our couples who visit the clinic as I understand exactly what they have been and are going through.

My working background is in office management and I have worked in a variety of environments including Graphic Design, Educational Supplies, Publishers, Universities and the Civil Service. In 2009, at the age of 50 I completed a BA Hons in Business and Management while working full time and looking after 4 boys at home. That was a busy time!

My role at Somerset Early Scans includes Practice Manager and also Assistant in the Bath Clinic. I feel very fortunate to have found and secured this role as I absolutely love it. In particular, I love being a part of the Team and helping to provide the very best professional and caring service that we possibly can.

Outside of work I am a keen long distance swimmer and when we have the time my husband and I enjoy kayaking, especially on Scottish Lochs.

Bridget Jones, Clinic Assistant

I am a 59 year young woman . I am married with two wonderful children now but feel the two babies I lost are still a part of my life that I hold dear and will never forget.

Many years ago I began my working life by becoming a general nurse, working within hospitals in Germany and Bath. I’ve worked within operating theatres and specialised in later years in elderly care and palliative care.
After retiring from nursing in 2010 I cared for an elderly friend a couple of times a week and nursed my mum who suffered from dementia.
My interests are singing and performing with Rock Choir and have been lucky enough to preform at Longleat House ,the Civic Hall in Trowbridge and Hyde Park London with some well known artists.
I love going away in my caravan and feel there is a bit of a gypsy in me…but I felt I was missing something in my life and since I’ve been working for Somerset Early Scans I feel more complete.
I began working for SES a year ago and have loved every minute .

Madeleine Shore, Clinic Assistant

I am Maddy, I’m a 20 year old Wildlife Conservation Student and aspiring Vet. I have worked as an assistant at Somerset Early Scans since 2018 and I love being part of such a special and hardworking team. I enjoy caring for people and listening to their stories, and have a
great memory for faces.

It’s lovely to see so many clients come back to us in subsequent pregnancies.

My interests are anatomy and physiology and conservation of the natural world. I love spending time in nature, and I am a keen runner.

Rose Parker, Clinic Assistant

Being 55 years old with 3 children, 4 step-children and 5 grandchildren, I can still remember all of my pregnancies for different reasons. My first child decided to arrive 7 weeks prematurely and stayed in the Special Care Baby Unit for 3 weeks before coming home. Of course this was a very worrying, anxious time for me and so many questions kept popping into my mind.
This experience made me anxious and nervous towards the following two pregnancies, which both resulted in healthy babies. Because of this, I understand and empathise how nervous and anxious being pregnant can be for all our ladies who attend our clinic.
I have previously worked as a Doctor’s receptionist and have been a qualified dispenser for a well-known pharmacy.
I am the latest member of Somerset Early Scans, joining the Bridgwater Clinic Team in September 2020. It has been so easy to fit in and I put that down to the whole team being so encouraging and supportive.

About Somerset Early Scans

The service was set up by Dr Joanna Clark in 2014 to offer early pregnancy scans to all women, not just those eligible for one on the NHS.

In 2015 the service was extended to also offer non invasive prenatal tests, the state of the art screening test for Down’s syndrome. In 2017 a clinic in Bath was opened and a new online booking facility launched. Over the following years we expanded our repertoire of scans offered and recruited more team members, Advanced Practitioner Sonographers Victoria and Bea, and Assistants Maddy, Gail and Bridget. Our Consultant Obstetrician Sarah joined us in 2019 In 2020 we welcomed assistant Rose and Gail Bratt stepped into the role of Practice Manager.

We have now seen many thousands of clients and had countless wonderful feedback messages about our care. We really enjoy working in the service as we get to provide care in a way that couples want, rather being restricted to what the NHS has the resources to offer. Giving worried people the reassurance they seek and having the time to offer a truly compassionate service is very rewarding.

We were runners up in the Somerset Business Awards 2021 for “Service Excellence”.  In our 2019 Care Quality Commission inspection we were rated “Outstanding” for well led and “Good” overall. We are fully insured and are registered with the information commissioners office. For our professional practice we maintain registrations with all the relevant bodies, namely the General Medical Council, Nursing and Midwifery Council, Society of Radiographers and we follow their codes of conduct.

What our clients say about us

“We were both delighted with the service, in the run up to the scan, with our questions being answered reassuringly and on the actual day. You were friendly and helpful Continue Reading
